Follow up to Dairy Queen, we find narrator D. J. making decent grades, helping out on her family's farm, and playing on the high school football team as the first female linebacker in Wisconsin. However, things don't stay well for long: her friendship with Brian, the rival high school quarterback, is strained by articles in People magazine. D.J.'s best friend runs away. Then her bother injures himself on the football field, and refuses to respond to anyone. D.J. stays with him in the hospital, and accompanies him to rehabilitation.
