The contents of this book are the diary of Mary Newbury, a teenage girl living in England with her grandmother in the 1600s. In 1659 her grandmother was hung, accused of being a witch; a mysterious woman gives Mary Puritan clothing and has her leave for America with a group of Puritans. However, the same threat which her grandmother faced sets upon Mary: she must choose to either marry a minister, or flee, to escape the accusation and fate of a witch.
